Jurgen Klopp got the draw he wanted.
Manchester United will meet Liverpool in the Europa League round of 16 and this could be the most compelling tie possible. The Red Devils will take on arch-rivals Liverpool in the next tie. The Northwest England rivalry/sort of derby rages on. Louis van Gaal has had an awful season, but he has taken care of the Reds.
United have defeated LFC twice this season. The first leg will be played at Anfield before United host Jurgen Klopp and company at Old Trafford.
Actually, LVG has won all four meetings with Liverpool since he took over for David Moyes. Amazingly, the two massive traditional powers have never met in European play before; neither in Champions League nor in the Europa League consolation bracket.
Jurgen Klopp is very excited about the match-up. Speaking at the League Cup final press conference at Melwood, he said: “It’s great. We deserve these games, with the game yesterday.”
“Obviously it is not easy, but you can ask my staff, when they asked me yesterday ‘who do you want?’ I said ‘Manchester United,’ I think we have to clear something. We had a good game when I was here when we played against them, but we lost 1-0. It was not what we deserved on that day, but we got it.”
“Life gives us the chance to make it better and that’s what we have to do, and what we’ll try. In this round, there were no easy games so we had no chance for an easy game. So we have Manchester United – cool!”
