Jose Mourinho Claims that He Always Puts the Club Above Himself

Ahead of tonight’s essentially must-win home match against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had some encouraging and gracious words for the fans. The Portugese faces a crucial crossroads clash Monday night, not just in regards to his time at United, but also in the scope of his career a whole.

Asked about the fan support the team received for their road match at Brighton last weekend, Mourinho expressed how thankful he is to the fans who showed out. Additionally, he made a very bold claim about himself over the course of his entire career.

“The supporters were fantastic in both matches [against Leicester and Brighton],” Mourinho said. “Not for me, for the team, which is the only thing that matters.”

“In my career, I was never selfish and thinking about myself, I was always a club man. I am really happy when the fans support the team. To be supportive of the team against Brighton, where we didn’t play well and lost, it gives you a fantastic feeling.

“I hope the players also feel it and they are ready to give them everything they have.”

That’s a major #humblebrag there, which of course means it’s just bragging, because a humblebrag is actually not a real thing, just a meaningless phrase that was pointlessly created. Unlike Mourinho’s “third season syndrome,” a popularized phrase that might be relevant in application to the current situation unfolding before us.

Mourinho says he’s always been a club man, submerging his agenda for the good of the team (we can think of at least a couple teams that would beg to differ with this assessment), but when was asked whether or not he is “content” with his team and how they have played through the first two games, he wouldn’t give a true response.

“You know my answer,” he replied tersely.

Asked what he meant by this response, he said again “you know my answer,” and then expounded enough to take a few shots at the media.

“I do not need to answer because I do not even know sometimes why I am here because you [the media] know everything,” Mourinho continued.

“During the week it looks like you show that you know everything then I come here and you ask me questions. It’s a bit strange.”

Well then, with replies as surly and defensive as this I guess we now have our answer about whether or not he’s content.
