It hasn’t been a very good title defense for last year’s cinderella story of all cinderella stories. Leicester City. The 5,000 to 1 long shot and defending champions are languishing in 14th place currently. However, that isn’t stopping last season’s Player of the Year, Leicester Winger Riyad Mahrez, from having a few laughs.
Those laughs are coming at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur, the very last team standing in the way of the Foxes for the trophy last seasons.
In the closing weeks of the season, Spurs blew a 2-0 lead against their hated London rivals Chelsea. An emotional night game ended in a 2-2 draw that gave Leicester the title. The game is of course also, and perhaps even more so, remembered for the ugly scene that ensued with fights breaking out.
The beautiful game truly became ugly that evening.
Still, when asked by Four-Four-Two what the funniest moment of the season was, Riyad Mahrez had this to say:
“The funniest moment [of last season]? I think it was when Tottenham were 2-0 ahead of Chelsea at half-time. All the team were at [Jamie] Vardy’s house thinking ‘we’re probably not going to be champions tonight’.”
“I was like, ‘What’s the point of coming today?!’ and then 2-1, 2-2… it was funny.”
