Dan Quinn favorite for New York Jets coaching gig

The New York Jets coaching carousel has made many stops, with not much momentum in between. Owner Woody Johnson reached out for help from former general managers, Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, which likely is the reason the new brain trust is taking their time while staying mum.

Jets fans may be impatient, but Johnson seems to finally understand that this is the logical way to fill the head- coaching void.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and the New York Jets:

“There is a lot of mutual interest between Dan Quinn and the New York Jets. They loved the way he interviewed, they love just as he is as a person and his vision for the potential franchise that he could take over. Plus, we know Dan Quinn is a defensive guy; he has one of the top units in Seattle. I am told he would bring Kyle Shanahan, the young innovative offensive coordinator, with him if he did land with the New York Jets. But the problem for the Jets is actually two-fold. First of all, they may have to wait awhile – 10 days – for Dan Quinn.

The other thing is they are not the only suitor for him. He is also getting interest from at least one other place. Keep an eye on San Francisco. The Jets, if they do want to hire him, may have some competition.”

Quinn, who is believed to have met with the Bears, Bills and Falcons as well.

Then there is the most recent news of Mike Shanahan gauging interest from the Bears (because of a potential Jay Cutler Re-union) and the Bills (A team seemingly on the rise). The Bills made this coaching search much more interesting for the New York Jets, because was believed that Doug Marrone was once the favorite to take the job.

According to CBS Sports Jason La Canfora: “Marrone quickly emerged as a candidate with this New York Jets team. He interviewed there on Saturday. The Bills started reaching out to other candidates. Frank Reich, their former quarterback, among them.”

They key name in that update should be Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich, who is scheduled to now interview with the Jets on Wednesday. That’s key, because although Marrone is the favorite for the Jets job, they have not jumped the gun and ignored other candidates. Reich is someone worth talking too, with an offensive background the Jets must focus on when narrowing down their top candidates.

Marrone, although more of an offensive-line guy who does not run his offense from the sidelines, made a Bills team who nobody expected to finish above .500 do just that. Reich, who was hired as the Chargers quarterback coach in 2013, was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2014. In 2013, Rivers was elected to the pro-bowl with a league leading 69.5 completion percentage after many thought the Chargers may try and trade the then struggling quarterback. Earlier in 2014, Rivers was a candidate for MVP.

Unless the Jets are blown away by Bowles this week, who is expected to interview with the Jets before anyone else, or if the Jets are quietly hiding their interest in Hamilton or McDaniels, the search could come to an end before the divisional round of the playoffs. The Jets have been smart so far in their search, but once one man is hired, the domino effect will occur and they can’t lose out on whomever their first choice is.
