The New York Jets coaching carousel has made many stops, with not much momentum in between. Owner Woody Johnson reached out for help from former general managers, Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, which likely is the reason the new brain trust is taking their time while staying mum.

Jets fans may be impatient, but Johnson seems to finally understand that this is the logical way to fill the head- coaching void.

Chargers topple the Packers in a sloppy match-up; Preseason Notes and Links

Football has finally arrived, at least sort-of. Despite making a comeback in the third quarter, the Packers fell just short to the Chargers by the score of 21-13.

Follow the jump to find some notes and links regarding the winners and losers on the Packers roster. [Read more…]

Lions Return Home to Face the Chargers

The odds makers have predicted that the San Diego vs. Detroit game on Christmas Eve will be even. Norv Turner’s teams traditionally perform at a much higher level during the latter portion of their seasons. This year is no exception, leaving fans of both camps wondering what will transpire at Ford Field.

The Lions have a 9-5 record heading into the last two weeks of play in the regular season. Even though the Green Bay Packers lost last week to the Chiefs, they still will be the champions of the NFC North. That leaves Detroit’s sights still firmly on the wild card possibilities. The team’s biggest obstacle offensively will be trying to run the ball.

Adrian Peterson and Christian Ponder were hobbling heading into Sunday’s contest at versus the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The former decided to sit it out while the latter tried to make a go of it. The result dictated that they both should have let other players take the field in their place.

Former Patriots, Chargers, Falcons WR to be Iowa Hawkeyes Honorary Captain

Tim dwight

Remember the name Tim Dwight? Or Timothy Deutch Dwight, Jr. originally taken by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft.

Dwight, who has the sweetest nickname ever “white lightning,” is perhaps best known for his 94-yard kickoff return TD for Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII. He has also played for the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Jets and Oakland Raiders in his career.

A highly endangered species these days (by that I mean a white return specialist) Dwight finished his college career with Big Ten records for punt return yardage (1,102) and punts returned for touchdowns (5);

He’ll forever be an Iowa Hawkeyes legend.

NFL Talking Points: Phillip Rivers, Jay Cutler, Harbaugh, Haynesworth, Dalton and More

-Norv Turner and the San Diego Chargers perpetually get out of the starting blocks slowly in September. For some reason, discussions of the top NFL quarterbacks begin and end with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. The passing yards leader last season was none other than Phillip Rivers. The other two have been great longer, but Rivers accumulated that statistic with a lackluster receiving corps.

Can the San Diego Chargers Put Disappointing 2010 Behind Them?

charger-cheerleader

True, the San Diego Chargers missed the NFL playoffs for the first time in the last five years, but was the season really that bad? A 9-7 record isn’t the worst thing in the world and there were a lot of positives with the team last season. With a bit of fine tuning and some luck they could easily turn things around in 2011.

They helped themselves out in the draft by taking defensive lineman Corey Liuget out of Illinois with the 18th pick overall. Liuget’s good enough to put some pressure on the team’s current defensive tackles and could end up making the team as a starter. The former Illini star could also help stopping the run and provide a pass rush; freeing up the Chargers’ outside linebackers.
