Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho gave his weekly press conference today ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Hull City. (You can watch the video of the session in its entirety at this link) There were many takeaways from the Q&A, but really the big one is this- United’s summer transfer window is now essentially closed.
The transfer window closes officially for United, and everybody else, in just four days but Mourinho ended the drama and intrigue on Friday by saying:
“in principle, there is nobody leaving and nobody is coming.”
Pretty cut and dry, black and white right there.
“I think we’re going to have a very quiet week, not surrounded by helicopters, waiting for somebody to leave or to arrive. I am more than happy with the squad I have,” Mourinho continued.
“I have 23 players in the squad and, in principle, there is nobody leaving and nobody is coming.
“It’s more than enough and, if you have a problem or an opportunity, then I have a few young players in the academy that I will be more than happy to give acceleration to in their process.”
So there you have it, you can put the Jose Fonte rumors to bed; at least until the January transfer window opens. (Of course, Mourinho’s earlier comments kind of dismissed the Fonte narrative anyway)
Of course, what will become of Bastian Schweinsteiger?
That is another entire topic and we covered that in detail over at this link.
Overall, by acquiring Eric Bailly, Henrik Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and world record expenditure Paul Pogba, it’s one hell of a transfer window. Can’t argue with that. You can also now start writing the first drafts of your Manchester United summer transfer window report card articles.
