There are no excuses for Manchester United not to compete for trophies this season, proclaimed United midfielder Ander Herrera early in the season.
Speaking from a financial stand point, he is entirely right. A computation released the same week he made those comments conveyed that United have the third costliest roster in all of Europe. The study calculated how much each club in the big five European leagues spent on each player that currently resides on their roster. The Red Devils were third behind Real Madrid and Manchester City.
“Last season was the first with the new staff and a lot of new players like me but, now, we have no excuses,”
“We have to fight for everything,” Ander Herrera said via in the issue of Inside United released a week after the summer transfer window closed.
“We are going to try to win every game. When I see the millions of supporters we have, I just think we cannot be fourth in the league, we have to be higher,” Herrera continued.
“It’s a very exciting season and we will be fighting for everything.”
Well, you know how this season has turned out. Left for dead in the race for a top four finish, United have responded with a recent surge, having won four in a row.
They are very much alive in the derby to grab a top four spot, but it will be a tremendous challenge to say the least; which we outlined here.
Herrera is now buzzing with extreme optimism, reciting all the organization talking points and toeing the party line for a publication put out by the club.
“We are showing passion,” Herrera told the club’s official website. “We fight to the end. We show that, when we don’t play good, we can win. I think that the attitude is very good.”
“I am optimistic because we can still fight for everything. We want to be in the top four.”
“We know it’s not easy because our opponents are tough — but we are Manchester United, and we have to win.
“We have three competitions to play, and we are going to fight to the end.”
Of course, what else would you expect him to say, or want him to say?
