Paterno Testimony: Would Have done more but didn’t want to Ruin A.D.’s Weekend

Joe Paterno gave a testimony before the grand jury investigation of Jerry Sandusky back in January. Today, it was read into the state record as Paterno himself was unable to attend due to his broken pelvis and lung cancer. Also,  Paterno was not legally mandated to appear at today’s hearing.

He was of course fired from his head coaching job five days after Sandusky was charged with several dozen counts of child sex abuse and former athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz were charged with lying to a grand jury about a report of rape in 2002. The A.D. and V.P. both resigned.

Read aloud during the hearing today, Paterno’s testimony lasted 6 minutes in court.

Here are some excerpts from the Patriot News:

He continued to explain that he couldn’t be precise about when he called athletic director Tim Curley because it was a Saturday, and he probably didn’t want to disrupt his weekend.

WHAT? Didn’t want to ruin his weekend? It’s alleged child rape, there are no bank holidays for that! WTF? Cops work weekends!

It was of sexual nature. I’m not sure exactly what it was. I didn’t push Mike … because he was obviously very upset,” according to his testimony. “I was in a little bit of a dilemma … because Sandusky didn’t work for me anymore,” it continues. Paterno testified that he told McQueary he would contact the appropriate people at Penn State.

Didn’t work for you anymore? So of course you don’t have to worry about it from a vocational standpoint, but what about as a human being? Your basic requirements as a person?

McQueary’s testimony was read aloud, and basically he told Paterno what he witnessed was extremely sexual in nature.

“I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Mr. Curley, I thought he would handle it appropriately,” according to testimony. “…I did tell Mike, you did what was right, you told me.”

Well obviously, Curley let him down then. And I wouldn’t say Mike McQueary did the right thing: going to his Dad and then Paterno. No, no no the right thing would have been contacting the authorities/police department ASAP.

And as insane as it is/sounds Sandusky actually has supporters in Central Pennsylvania

Even more bizarre, Sandusky had a volunteer coaching position at a small Pennsylvania college LAST YEAR! And they let him in despite his failure to report his ongoing investigation! When that was discovered, his position was terminated. Yet Sandusky continued to harass the school.
