Polls in Pennsylvania show a pretty close to even split on the issue of renaming Penn State’s Beaver Stadium after Joe Paterno.

A Quinnipiac University survey found that 46 percent of those polled thought the school should rename Beaver Stadium, while 40 percent were opposed. But the margin of error is nearly 3 points among the 1,300 registered voters who were surveyed.

Joe Paterno’s 1992 Letter to College Presidents Reeks of Fraud

joe-paterno

Given what kind of year it’s been for Penn State, Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno, this old letter I saw republished on Athlon seems perfect for revisiting.  Sandusky looks guilty as sin for the crimes alleged against him, and Paterno looks like the complete opposite of the man who was named Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year” in 1986.

Think about that for a second, the man who had his name removed from the Stagg Big Ten Championship trophy in disgrace last month was once named “Sportsman of the Year.”

This is an open letter Paterno wrote to the college presidents commission in 1992 regarding the importance of integrity and and the role that coaches play in helping provide for the welfare of young people.

Yes, he’s giving advice on these topics- a man who helped enable child rape.

I hope you enjoy the unintentional dark comedy.

Penn St WR Who Punched Starting QB Not Making Bowl Trip

penn-st.-logo

The Penn State Nittany Lions will be without four players for its TicketCity Bowl game against Houston on New Year’s Day, the only one you’ve heard of is wide receiver Curtis Drake, who beat up starting QB Matt McGloin a week or so ago.

McGloin has thrown 1,571 yards, 8 TDs and 5 INTs this season, completing 54% of his passes, but throwing for a miniscule 6.8 yards per attempt. Drake has just 5 catches for 102 yards and a TD on the season. Coach Tom Bradley said Drake is missing the game, played in the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas, for “personal reasons.” Whatever that means.

McGloin himself is still questionable after not practicing today.

Christmas Wish: No More Child Molesters in Sports

family-guy-herbert

Without a doubt, the news story of the year in 2011 was Penn State. Joe Paterno went from all time leader in college football victories to enabler of child rape in less than a week.

Has there ever been a fall from grace this far, this fast?

Has there ever been such a disgusting monster to hold a higher position in sports than Jerry Sandusky?

Has there ever been a more clueless set of narrow-minded idiots than the myopic subset of PSU fans who rioted/still neglect to face the truth today?

Have you ever seen a greater failure in chain of command/crisis management than Penn State University?

Former Penn State Players Circulating Letter in Support of Joe Paterno

penn-st.-logo

Below is a letter signed by 425 former Penn State players showing support for former head coach Joe Paterno who turned 85 years old today. I was pretty surprised to see Todd Blackledge sign it. As a member of the media establishment, an establishment that has kind of condemned Paterno for his role in protecting Jerry Sandusky.

Unless you’re someone who’s Penn State blue through and through, you’re likely going to be at least somewhat upset by what you read after the jump.

Penn St Update: Paterno Released from Hospital, QB Suffered Seizure, Concussion

matt-mcgloin

Joe Paterno was released from the hospital yesterday as he continues his rehabilitation from his broken pelvis. He’s also continuing treatment for lung cancer.

According to a source who told ESPN, the treatments are “really taking a lot out of (him)….he has his good days and bad.”

Then there’s QB Matt McGloin who was beat up by wide receiver Curtis Drake on Saturday. They argued over miscues on the practice field, leading to Drake confronting McGloin at his locker and the brouhaha began.

Mike McQueary Told Paterno he Witnessed “Extremely Sexual” Acts by Sandusky

mike-mcqueary

Yesterday the embattled Mike McQueary gave his testimony at the preliminary hearing for two Penn State officials (former Athletic Director Tim Curley and V.P. Gary Schultz) charged with lying to the grand jury investigating sex crimes by Jerry Sandusky.

The former Penn State coach and recruiting coordinator appears to no longer be with the program, but his testimony to be very key to this case.

McQueary claims that less than 12 hours after he witnessed Sandusky with his arms wrapped around a young boy, molesting him in a locker room shower, he went to Joe Paterno‘s home, sat at his kitchen table and told him he’d seen something “way over the lines and extremely sexual in nature.”

Paterno Testimony: Would Have done more but didn’t want to Ruin A.D.’s Weekend

paterno

Joe Paterno gave a testimony before the grand jury investigation of Jerry Sandusky back in January. Today, it was read into the state record as Paterno himself was unable to attend due to his broken pelvis and lung cancer. Also,  Paterno was not legally mandated to appear at today’s hearing.

He was of course fired from his head coaching job five days after Sandusky was charged with several dozen counts of child sex abuse and former athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz were charged with lying to a grand jury about a report of rape in 2002. The A.D. and V.P. both resigned.

Read aloud during the hearing today, Paterno’s testimony lasted 6 minutes in court.

Here are some excerpts from the Patriot News:

Joe Paterno Breaks Pelvis: Health Issues an Overlooked Story?

joe-paterno

Usually, a story about the all time leader in college football coaching victories breaking his pelvis and/or receiving treatment for lung cancer would be big news.

Especially when that individual will be 85-years-old in ten days. There was plenty of media coverage when it was learned that the disgraced and fired former Penn State coach Joe Paterno developed lung cancer. Everyone and their brother tweeted about how it was karma in action.

But there’s been little media coverage of how Paterno’s treatment/fight against the disease is going.

How will today’s big new development in the world of Paterno health be covered?

Joe Paterno Visits Hospital for Unknown Ailment; Media Ignore It

joe paterno

Hard to believe a story like this slipped through the cracks.

Joe Paterno, the recently fired Penn State head football coach and all-time leader in college football wins visited a campus infirmary and a local hospital Wednesday night for treatment of an undisclosed issue. And no one noticed.

Questions abound about the 84-year-old coach’s health in the wake of the scandal and his dismissal.

Penn State, Matt McGloin is Your Quarterback, Accept That Already!

I’m a firm believer that when you say you have two #1 quarterbacks, you really have none. And the Penn St. Nittany Lions claim they have two number ones, even though it’s PAINFULLY obvious they have a clear cut #1 and clear cut #2. Matt McGloin IS your QB1, Rob Bolden is your QB2.

Whether you admit it or not.

Fresh off their historical win at Northwestern, where McGloin was a very efficient 17-26 for 192 yards, 2 TDs and no picks, Joe Paterno had this to say:

“No, no they’ll be days when Bolden will play, you guys- we won the game WE WON THE GAME!”

So is Matt McGloin the starting QB?

“Who knows? You guys are the experts,” he responded.

Thanks! I try…..
