Sir Alex Ferguson has a new book coming out today, and all sorts of fascinating tales are being leaked to the press beforehand. One of the most compelling stories from the Manchester United legend revolves around who the living legend initially wanted to succeed him. Before settling on David Moyes, Fergie earlier approached Pep Guardiola.
Sir Alex had this meeting with Guardiola prior to his final season at Old Trafford, but the timing just didn’t work out.
“I had dinner with Pep Guardiola in New York in 2012, but couldn’t make him any direct proposal because retirement was not on my agenda at that point,” Ferguson wrote in his new book “Leading.”
“He had already won an enviable number of trophies with Barcelona… and I admired him greatly. I asked Pep to phone me before he accepted an offer from another club, but he didn’t and wound up joining Bayern Munich in July 2013.”
Oh what might have been in the first year post Sir Alex.
In April 2013 United sacked Moyes. The Scotsman failed to even last a season at Old Trafford. “The Chosen One” by Sir Alex Ferguson was “The Jobless One,” but not for very long. Moyes received a very lucrative exit package (he had signed a six year contract) and quickly landed on his feet in La Liga.
Although it appears that story doesn’t have a happy ending either. Moyes’ new side Real Sociedad is hovering around the drop zone, and the Mirror is claiming he’s in danger of being sacked again.
