Whenever the English Premier League is discussed, it is often referred to as the singularly most entertaining competition in the world of football. It’s so-called product, which is backed by billions of pounds worth of broadcasting money and investment, features some of the best talent in world football and an infrastructure that encourages fast-paced, attacking play.
Contrary to the hyperbole that surrounds the English Premier League, however, a recent study by Sportsmail of the worlds’ football leagues has revealed that the EPL is outstripped by the German Bundesliga and other national competitions when it comes to sheer entertainment.
While the EPL matches the equally lauded La Liga in Spain for goalmouth action, there are surprisingly nine other nations with a higher strike rate. Take the Austrian League, for example, where fans enjoy an average of 3.3 goals per game over the course of a complete season. The Dutch and German leagues follow with goal averages of 3.20 and 3.16 respectively, while all other competitions on the list see less than three strikes per game. The EPL ranked tenth on the recent list, having delivered a total of 1,052 goals last season at a strike rate of 2.77 per game. La Liga followed with a healthy rate of 2.75 goals per game, while Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1 languished behind with relatively low returns.
With the Premier League’s goal ratio having slipped further at the beginning of the current season, and with teams like Real Madrid scoring at a phenomenal rate in La Liga, the odds are that La Liga will supersede the EPL in terms of entertainment value in 2015. This is bad news for English fans, who are already facing the prospect that current leaders Chelsea will win the title without serious opposition. The blues are favourites according to www.tipsontits.co.uk, which is quite a statement when you consider that we are only in November.
