Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, who recently pledged his allegiance to Scotland in terms of international competition, is in the midst of a genuine breakthrough season. After just two senior team appearances for Manchester United last season, the 21-year-old has 21 this campaign.
We’ve seen McTominay in and out of the first team this season, sometimes even earning selection over United’s most expensive player, Paul Pogba. As McTominay has developed this term, manager Jose Mourinho pointed out in early December how he’s longer “young Scott,” a youth team player, but instead just another player in senior team consideration.
McTominay returned the favor by reciprocating praise for Mourinho. He credits the Portugese as being a major factor in his development this season.
“Obviously, there are numerous different factors that have contributed in terms of my development but the main one is Jose Mourinho,” McTominay told Inside United magazine, a publication put out by the club.
“He’s had the faith to put me in for important matches and trusted me in really big games. So all credit goes to him. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had chances to play and show people I’m hopefully capable of being a Manchester United player in the future.”
“There’s nothing better for me than being selected in the big games. The Champions League game at Sevilla, the Champions League game before that, Liverpool, Chelsea and even the other cup games as well.”
“It’s really good for me to be trusted by the manager. I hope to repay him as he’s done really well to push me forward.”
McTominay and company are next in action against Brighton on Saturday, as they reconvene their FA Cup campaign.
