This fall, it was revealed that Memphis Depay‘s Manchester United kit was the highest seller of any in England this season. Worldwide, he’s third behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
This is according to a listing in Kit Bag, with a hat tip to FOX Sports @ The Buzzer, video below:
As the video points out, Angel Di Maria was the #1 best seller in England last year. United gave both Di Maria and Depay the number 7, it’s the numeral most associated with the very best players in club history. David Beckham. Cristiano Ronaldo. George Best. Eric Cantona. Bryan Robson, the list goes on and on and on. Depay has gone the Di Maria route unfortunately- a total flop.
Meaning a lot of those purchasers of the Depay shirt most likely have severe buyer’s remorse right now. They might be best served by covering up his name with that of one of the MUFC club legends.
Even though Depay led the Dutch Eredivisie in scoring in 2014-15, his goal scoring numbers in Premier League play this past season were pathetic. Thus, he found himself falling out of favor and far down the depth chart; and landing on the ESPN FC worst XI team.
Depay was the only United player to make the PL worst XI, but he was joined by a teammate in a poll conducted by the Bristol based outlet. ESPN FC asked their readers “who was the biggest flop of the season?”
Bastian Schweinsteiger joined Depay on the short list, along with Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi. Happy voting.
More importantly, Depay’s decline in play means that his future with the club is in serious doubt. Yes, just one year after his acquisition, Depay could be out the door. Another winger one year experiment failed, just like Angel Di Maria. Both wearing the iconic #7 shirt.
Here are some late season headlines pertaining to this idea.
The Sun: “The Old Trafford side, meanwhile, reportedly want to sell Dutch flop Memphis Depay just a year after signing him.”
Daily Express “Louis van Gaal has held crunch talks with Memphis Depay over the winger’s future at Manchester United.”
Sunday Express: “Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has sanctioned the sale of Memphis Depay just a year after his arrival and it’s understood clubs at home and abroad have been contacted about taking the 22-year-old on the cheap.”
