It promises to be a very exciting summer transfer window at Manchester United, with plenty of comings and goings. Who will be the next to join Fred and Diogo Dalot as new arrivals this summer? How about Uruguay national team captain Diego Godin?
Taking a spin through the latest transfer rumors and gossip making the rounds on the internet today, we see the 32-year-old leader of La Celeste as the latest big name linked with a move to Old Trafford.
The Atletico Madrid central defender has had a very stellar World Cup, helping to lead his side to three wins in three games. In the knockout round, they’ll have a scintillating match-up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.
The Manchester Evening News, Sports Mole and others, relying on a report in Spanish daily newspaper AS, claim that Godin could be available for just £18 million ($23.8 million) this summer as the 32-year-old has just one year left on his current deal with Atletico. Amid interest from both United and Juventus, the central defender is also in negotiations to potentially stay put in the Spanish capital, and with the display he’s currently putting on in Russia, his stock will only rise higher.
United manager Jose Mourinho, strongly associated with a brand of football that emphasizes defense, seems to be focusing this summer on going even more so in this direction. Diogo and Diego could provide a nice upgrade in the back line, a unit that has been in need of augmentation above Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for far too long.
It may not be the most exciting style of play, but it is effective at producing results. Godin would be the kind of player that fits in nicely with this mentality.
