Time for your daily David de Gea update. It’s a a never ending soap opera like Arturo Vidal was last summer. Will he stay at Manchester United, or move to Real Madrid? In the words of The Simpsons Sideshow Mel, “this endeavor, is the height of tedium.” Nothing is official yet of course, but here’s the latest headlines on the situation.
Yesterday, following United’s 1-0 home win over Tottenham Hotspur, Louis van Gaal answered a couple David De Gea questions. (You can watch the video here). The best part was when the told the reporter “that’s none of your business.” That response came when Van Gaal was asked if Real Madrid had failed to meet United’s asking price.
Which brings us to the Sunday tabloids, so take all of these narratives with a grain of salt. The Mail on Sunday claims Van Gaal is demanding £35 million from Real for De Gea, but the Spaniards are preparing to test Manchester United’s resolve with a bid £25 million bid. The Daily Star Sunday edition has a story claiming Van Gaal warned Real Madrid: “You won’t get David de Gea on the cheap.”
That £35 million would absolutely shatter the world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper, if it were to actually happen. So what happens if and when this tedious De Gea story line actually gets resolved?
Well, there’s been tons of gossip and rumors surrounding Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris as a replacement.
However, there’s actually a different keeper who’s being deemed United’s top potential target. The Mail also claims that United are preparing for De Gea’s departure by reigniting their interest in Ajax ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen.
Also, the Sunday Mirror has a story on Ajax boss Frank de Boer warning United that the asking price for keeper Jasper Cillessen is going up by the week.
