Tuesday brings a couple of different news items relating to the present and future of central defender Gary Cahill. On the club side, the 32-year-old will reportedly not be moving away from Chelsea before the European transfer window closes. Despite being left out of the first three match day squads for the Blues, Cahill will stay put and try to impress new manager Maurizio Sarri.
Shifting to matters of country, Cahill has now hung up his boots for England, calling time on his international career.
Club wise, there had been reports in Turkey claiming that Galatasaray was pursuing Cahill, with unnamed Premier League teams interested as well. The Telegraph writes that:
“A move to Turkey is not thought to be attractive to Cahill at this time and unless a much better option emerges, the central defender is prepared to try to fight his way back into Sarri’s plans until January when he can reassess his situation.”
For now, Sarri is content with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger as his first-choice centre back pairing, and thus Cahill would need to move elsewhere for regular first team football.
Shifting to matters of international competition, Gary Cahill was on England’s World Cup squad that finished fourth in Russia this summer, but he’s buried on the depth chart behind Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kyle Walker.
Cahill scored five goals, and won 61 caps for Three Lions.
