Unai Emery Admits Arsenal is Pursuing Nicolas Pepe, Other Players

Just ten shopping days left until the summer transfer window closes, and Arsenal FC manager Unai Emery admits his club is working on getting some deals over the line. That includes Lille winger Nicolas Pepe, who the Gunners were strongly linked to over the weekend.

According to numerous outlets, Arsenal are ready to smash their club transfer fee record, and bring on the 24-year-old for £72 million. Reportedly, the deal has already been agreed upon, but obviously it’s not official until it’s official, and it hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.

When asked about the Pepe stories, Emery answered:

“We are working and thinking about how we can improve. There are different players on the table, with the possibility [of signing] if we can. Pepe is a very good player, and also we are thinking only of players that will improve this squad, and also give us some different conditions to improve.”

“We are working for the last eight weeks, and before the first game of the season to get the best team together with the best players in our squad.”

Thus far, Arsenal have signed midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid and defender William Saliba from St. Etienne, the latter of which will be loaned back to France for the upcoming season.

So who could those additional players, beyond Nicolas Pepe, be this summer? Well, the north London side had previously been regarded as leading the chase to sign Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, but now Everton have made a £55m bid for the winger, and that could change the narrative completely, according to Sky Sports News.

Arsenal lost 2-1 to Lyon in the 2019 preseason Emirates Cup on Sunday.
