Romelu Lukaku Explains the Purpose of His Goal Celebration

Manchester United and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has been all over the headlines this international break. That’s a great thing, because actual headlines are scarce during these breaks. Lukaku scored one of Belgium’s two goals as they beat Greece 2-1, in a World Cup qualifier earlier yesterday.

He celebrated the goal by doing a Hulk Hogan style cupping his ear to taunt the crowd. The gesture implies “let me hear you” or “I can’t hear you,” and it was in retaliation to all the noise from jeers and taunts provided by the hostile Greek crowd.

It was also a very emotional scoring strike because it came less than 60 seconds after Greece’s equalizer. Some of the home fans were still celebrating their own side’s goal at the time.

“I did it because the crowd had also been irritating me. I got lasers shone in my eyes, but I expected that,” Lukaku said.

“There is nothing better in football than to win a game in those conditions.”

The win gave Belgium first place finish in Group H. Next summer they will head to Russia as a side that will be amongst the favorites. However Romelu Lukaku wants to worry about that later, and instead focus on domestic and European glory with United for the time being.

“Let’s stop talking about the World Cup until June. We’re going to try to achieve the highest possible level with our clubs so that we can be ready,”

“It’s better to celebrate this qualification modestly rather than in a euphoric way, as if we were world champions.”

Some other headline made by Lukaku this break included the hilarious advertisement he did for Belgian football (where he drew this hideous mascot), and an interesting Wayne Rooney interview, where the summer transfer addition was described by Roo as “the perfect player” for United.
