35-year-old former Barcelona playmaker Xavi was reportedly targeted by Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United, but opted to join Qatari club Al Sadd as his Barca contract winded down. The Spain international won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with the Catalan giants.
Today, Xavi revealed that if he had chosen an English club to sign with instead, it would have been United or Liverpool, but preferably Old Trafford.
“To be honest, the Premier League is a big attraction for any player. It’s brilliant — the stadiums, the pitches, the fans and how they live football over there — it’s all incredible over there,” he said to Eurosport.
“There are many great sides like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool. If I had to select one, it would have to be a club with a great history; maybe Manchester United or Liverpool.”
“I know that there are clubs who have emerged quite recently, like Manchester City for example, but United is my favorite historically-speaking,” Xavi continued.
Xavi is considered to be one of the greatest central midfielders of all time.
