Jose Mourinho Becomes First Manager to Spend £1 Billion in Transfer Market

Jose Mourinho has officially accomplished something that no other football manager can claim. The Special One could be deemed “The Spending One” as no other football boss has spent more money on acquiring new players than Mourinho. The Portugese became the first to surpass the £1 billion mark, according to a report in The Sun.

Now entering his second year at Manchester United, Mourinho was granted a £146 million war chest for three players (£75m Romelu Lukaku, £31m Victor Lindelof and £40m Nemanja Matic), and they still might not be done yet. Last summer saw the club break the world transfer fee record for Paul Pogba at £89.3m, but of course the Neymar deal this past week has made all other transfer fees look “cute” by comparison.

Mourinho has worked for big clubs with deep pockets over the course of his 17 years including Real Madrid (2010-2013), Inter (2008-2010) and Chelsea twice (2004-2007 and 2013-2015).

Having resources like that have provided Mourinho the opportunity to spend at least £30m on seven different players, but his record looks like it could one day soon be eclipsed by Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester City boss is currently £250m behind Mourinho but he’s racked up that wage bill in eight less seasons. Given the very loose pursue strings at The Etihad, Guardiola could catch up to, and even surpass Mourinho in the coming years.
