Wayne Rooney left Everton for Manchester United in 2004, but he donned the blue Toffees shirt again today in a testimonial game for Duncan Ferguson. Everton lost 2-1 to Villarreal in that contest.

‘It’s nice to come back here and the fans gave me a great reception, which obviously I was delighted with,’ the United and England National Team skipper said.

‘Most importantly it was a big day for Duncan and he really enjoyed the game and it was nice to see him back on the pitch again.’

‘It was a bit different today, going into the home dressing room again. It was a bit weird at first but as I say didn’t know what to expect with the reception but it was a great reception.’

Wayne Rooney was greeted with a very warm reception today when he came on as a substitute for Tom Cleverley in the second half. It was a lot more pleasant than the greetings he usually receives when he comes back to Merseyside as an opponent wearing red.

Most importantly, he didn’t get hurt playing in the testimonial. Not to bury the lede, but that’s top priority.
