ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on Bears, Jay Cutler, Bulls, Derrick Rose

Mike Greenberg and his partner Mike Golic will hit the road for hyped up college football and NFL games this year. They’ll be in Evanston on Friday, Oct. 4, in advance of Saturday’s match-up with “Greeny’s” alma mater vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The co-host of the nationally syndicated ESPN radio show “Mike And Mike in the Morning” was gracious enough to grant me an exclusive interview yesterday by phone. We talked Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls. The 1989 graduate of NU served as Honorary Captain this past Saturday during the Wildcats 48-27 demolition of the Cuse.

Here’s part one of the interview.

Below you’ll see a portion of his ESPN College Gameday segment from this past Saturday with the NU football team

Paul M. Banks: Tell me your thoughts on Jay Cutler, Marc Trestman and all the big Bears storylines this year.

Mike Greenberg: “I’m a believer, I have had log conversations with Steve Young about Trestman, and if you’ve eve heard him talk about Trestman, you’d have a very favorable of Trestman. And I think it is almost a perfect storm of circumstances coming together with a quarterback guru to work with Cutler in a year when they got him a little more help as far as weapons, a  lot more help as far as protection. And he’s in a contract year, so the stars are kind of aligned for him to have the year that I have felt he’s long capable of.

And if he doesn’t do it now, then even I who is his last supporter, or I feel like I’m his last supporter, will say it’s never going to happen. I think he’s been capable of being a top flight NFL quarterback, and I think this is the year it’s finally going to happen.”

Paul M. Banks: what about the return of Derrick Rose with the Chicago Bulls? Where do they fit in the NBA Eastern Conference picture?

Mike Greenberg: “There’s every reason to think Rose will come back as good as ever. And frustrating as it was in the playoffs last year watching and waiting, all those unusual circumstances, maybe in the big picture it was the right thing to do. And if he is just as strong and explosive as ever, then it will have been. If he is himself, then there’s really only one way to look at it.”

“I see four teams in the Eastern Conference that I could see winding up in the championship, and they’re definitively one of them. You start with Miami, giving them the respect that they deserve, then you have Indiana, the Nets and the Bulls, and I could see any one of those teams winning the Eastern Conference. And I would put a 25% chance on each one.”

You can locally catch Mike Greenberg with his partner Mike Golic on WMVP ESPN 1000 from 5-9 AM.
