It’s an interesting argument and not one that I’ve actually considered until Bill Simmons posed it to Barack Obama in the latest issue of GQ. Simmons had an exclusive with the leader of the free world for Gentleman’s Quarterly and it covered a whole multitude of topics.
It was mostly sociopolitical in nature, but there was some sports topics sprinkled here and there. As it was The Sports Guy conducting it, you obviously had sports analogies within much of the Q&A.
There were Aaron Rodgers and Gregg Popovic analogies, along with some Chicago Bulls, NBA and Michael Jordan talk. The question of Jay Cutler versus Derrick Rose, that exchange is below.
I had to ask you one thing you can’t answer! Here’s one you have to answer: Who’s more untradable, Derrick Rose or Jay Cutler?
[pause] Oh, I think Rose still has more upside. Remember, Rose is still awfully young. So you haven’t given up on Rose?
I’ve not given up on him. Sadly, I think it’s hard to imagine, after that many injuries, him getting back to his MVP-season performance. But he can still be a top-ten point guard.
Who would you keep, if posed the same question Jay Cutler or Derrick Rose?
At the beginning of the respective 2015 seasons it seemed like Jay Cutler was the Chicago sports franchise player with lesser value/more likely to have a future outside the Windy City in the near future.
Today, the opposite is true. Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase got the very best out of Jay Cutler this season. Cutty Does it’s 2015 was by far the most season of his career; especially when considering what he did and didn’t have to work with.
Derrick Rose, on the other hand, has not had a good 2015-16. He’s still a horrendous three-point shooter, a part of his game that he’ll need to finally develop if he is to keep opposing defenses honest regarding his dribble penetration.
To each his own though, and I’m not going to argue against the POTUS. And of course magazine’s move at a glacial pace in story development/publication, so Simmons probably did the interview way back in October or something. Still this exchange below was eye-catching-
Would you ever want to be part of the ownership for an NBA team?
Absolutely.Would it have to be the Bulls, or would it have to be somebody else?
Well, you know, I know [Jerry] Reinsdorf pretty good—he’s not giving that thing up anytime soon. But I have fantasized about being able to put together a team and how much fun that would be. I think it’d be terrific.
