New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Won’t Be Ready for Champions League

The proverbial goalposts of new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been moved back yet again. If you’re scoring at home, the delay is now up to six months, as the club announced today that upcoming Premier League fixtures versus Watford, Newcastle United and Leicester City will now take place at their temporary home of Wembley Stadium.

The latest projection, prior to today’s posting on the Spurs official website, held out hopes of christening the new venue with European football, but it is has now been confirmed that Tottenham will host Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at the national stadium at Feb. 13.

If they reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, and have a home match- that will also be played at Wembley on Feb. 16/17.

Remember, the original target date for opening was September, and given the news today, one shouldn’t be surprised if the venue opening is delayed again. At this point, being able to host a match at the new White Hart Lane before season’s end would have to be considered a victory.

Huge credit to the team though, despite this hindrance and distraction, they are still in: the top four of the league, the knockout round of Champions League, in great position to reach the title of the League Cup and through to the next round of the FA Cup.
