It seems that David de Gea will be staying at Manchester United, and not moving to Real Madrid. Interconnected to this situation, it appears Sergio Ramos is not coming to Old Trafford. However, the United transfer window will still buzz with lots of activity before it closes. United have already signed four players: Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
There’s still more to come claims Manager Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman wants “at least two” more players.
He says United aren’t done acquiring more players this offseason.
When asked if there will be more transfer activity this summer Van Gaal told MUTV: “I hope so. No, we are not finished yet, I think.”
“It is what I have said already in many press conferences. We need a balance in the selection and I think we still need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that when it is possible.”
“But we shall only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level. And, of course, that is in the eyes of our staff, but I have to have confidence that he can cope with the rhythm of the Premier League.”
Those two positions he has in mind are probably striker and center-back. United have decent center-backs right now but they don’t have the level of talent at that position to win the Premier League. Old Trafford had been linked to Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid (that’s not going to likely happen) and Nicolas Otamendi (which very well could happen).
The departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao opens up a spot at striker, but if United don’t buy someone at the position they may try playing their newly acquired Winger Depay at the spot, and stand pat with Javier Hernandez. It appears that the club won’t sell Chicharito as of now.
Van Gaal’s club have been linked to a number of strikers this summer, but none of those scenarios have emerged as a deal that’s very likely to happen soon.
If not striker or center back, maybe goalkeeper is the position Van Gaal is talking about? Victor Valdes is headed for the exit door and the long term future of De Gea is in serious doubt, so added depth at the position will certainly be prioritized at some point.
