Rooney Scores Nice Goal but Man United Looked Apathetic, Dreadful

Tonight Manchester United suffered their second loss in Group play of the Europa League; dropping them down to third place in their group. They now have serious concerns about even advancing beyond the group stage. They’ll have their work cut out for them if they want to reach the knockout round.

We honestly can’t be sure if they truly are interested though, given what they have shown us. Today’s 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce was just an atrocious outing all around, but the lack of interest they conveyed might be the worst aspect of the whole thing.

It was a nightmare performancehttps://t.co/dzaSd0KBPQ

The Red Devils just didn’t look interested in this tournament tonight, and it’s not the first time. In their trip to Feyenoord, they were clearly apathetic about this tourney, and Manager Jose Mourinho made comments prior to that tie admitting his lack of excitement for the Europa League. That disinterest started at the top and trickled down to the players who likewise didn’t check in mentally.

Mourinho isn’t providing leadership, direction or an identity. United have a ton of big name, special players and maybe Mourinho is the biggest name of all, yet they’re underachieving just as badly as they did under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

The only highlight today was this booming brace from Wayne Rooney:

Yes, but it came very late in the game and the result was already long decided. Still it was nice to see the Rooney of old there, of a long time ago. Then again, he also had a horrible miss on a golden scoring opportunity, and squandering that chance really killed United today.
