Right now David Beckham is busy getting his as-of-yet unnamed Major League Soccer franchise off the ground in Miami. However, that’s another story for another time. The biggest news in the United Kingdom right now is the vote on independence for Scotland. The referendum on independence takes place on Thursday and polls show that Scots are split 50/50 on whether or not they want to secede.
In an open letter released by the Let’s Stay Together campaign, the former England national team football captain says ”my sincere hope is that you will vote to renew our historic bond which has been such a success over the centuries.”
David Beckham adds:
“what unites us is much greater than what divides us”
Becks played for Manchester United from 1992-2003 under legendary Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He also spoke of his pride at representing Britain in the bid team that secured the 2012 Olympics for London.
“we worked together to bring the greatest sporting event of them all to our nation,” said Beckham.
He was also part of the famous “Class of ’92” at United who transcended sports culture in the U.K.
On a somewhat related note, have you seen Groundskeeper Willie from The Simpsons weigh in on the issue of Scottish Independence? It’s a must watch:
