True leadership comes from taking accountability and responsibility for when things go horribly awry. Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is displaying these traits right now as he says his club will accept any and all responsibility for the fracas last weekend.
This past Saturday, Chelsea Assistant Marco Ianni ran down the touchline to celebrating his side’s game tying goal directly in front of United boss Jose Mourinho and the visitors’ bench. Mourinho got up and he was so incensed that he needed to be restrained. Afterward Mourinho said that he hopes Ianni is not sacked for his actions.
Sarri said he and his club will take full accountability for any discipline handed out by the Football Association.
“First of all as I said after the match, we were wrong. I was there when Marco spoke to Mr. Mourinho. He said sorry immediately and it was really very important I think that he realized he was wrong,” Sarri is quoted in The Guardian.
“And so I think that I want to give him another opportunity. Because I know very well the man, I know very well that he was really sorry. And he realized the mistake – everybody can make a mistake, but you need to learn from the mistake, and so I think he will be able to do this. I know [him] very well, so I am sure.”
“For the FA I don’t know, I haven’t experienced that here. I don’t know the consequences, but we were wrong so we have to accept the consequences.”
Sarri was asked about any kind of Chelsea internal discipline that could be made against Ianni.
“I don’t know. If I want to give him another opportunity, the opportunity will be a full opportunity,” Sarri responded. but I don’t know. I want to respect the decision of the FA and then we will decide.”
