The latest word on Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is that he suffered a fractured wrist, and could miss the start of the Premier League season. He’s obviously out for the entire preseason now. A statement on Tottenham’s website reads:

“The club can confirm that Hugo Lloris has sustained a fractured wrist during the close season period.

“The France goalkeeper will continue to work alongside the first-team squad to build up his fitness in a bid to be ready for the start of the season.

“Our medical team will continue to monitor his rehabilitation and progress during pre-season.”

Spurs season opener is at Old Trafford versus Manchester United on August 8th. Coincidentally, that’s club Lloris has been linked with in transfer rumors this summer. Should David de Gea leave United for Real Madrid; the domino theory goes, the Red Devils would pursue Lloris. The Sun even had a story a month ago that Tottenham would consider a move for Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin should Hugo Lloris depart.

Of course, Spurs have not really expressed an interest in selling Lloris, and De Gea’s move to his hometown, the Spanish capital, is still in limbo. Yes, a potential chain reaction started with current Los Blancos #1 Iker Casillas leaving Madrid for Porto, but negotiations on a potential De Gea transfer have been dead-locked for awhile.

It’s worth mentioning that Lloris signed a five year contract extension last summer. His injury, coupled with the retirement of Brad Friedel, leaves Spurs with just Michel Vorm as a senior goalkeeper fit for selection.
