Update: Herrera’s dismissal has been officially announced
Mexican National Team Head Coach Miguel Herrera, no stranger at all to controversy, reportedly punched a journalist following Mexico’s victory in the Gold Cup Final. As we’ve said in the past, Miguel Herrera looks like what would happen if Pete Rose, Chris Farley and Tom Crean had a kid, but what he did here, is no laughing matter.
Herrera allegedly struck hit television commentator Christian Martinoli Monday morning at an airport in Philadelphia, according to Azteca’s Devid Medrano.
The Manager of EL Tri reportedly came up to Martinoli from behind, punched him in the neck and threatened him, according to AS Mexico. The incident occurred near the airport security gates. Herrera is known for letting his emotions get the best of him.
Christian Martinoli and Miguel Herrera have had a dust up on Twitter just last month.
La elegancia del entrenador nacional me encanta. No es porrista, es barrabrava.
— Christian Martinoli ? (@martinolimx) June 21, 2015
According to Google translate, Martinoli said “National coach elegance love. It’s not a cheerleader, it is hooligan.”
Ofrezco una disculpa por Las palabras altisonantes de la conferencia de prensa si alguien se molesto lo siento cuidare mi lenguaje a futuro
— Miguel Herrera (@MiguelHerreraDT) June 21, 2015
Herrera’s Tweet was his owning up to the incident and offering up a mea culpa. His statement translates to “I offer an apology for the lofty words of the press conference if someone is annoying sorry my langue cuidare future.”
