Chelsea Chairman Expects Christian Pulisic to Help Grow American Fanbase

The transfer of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea this past transfer window was done for football reasons, but it also looks to be a win-win-win from a business perspective. The American international winger should help Chelsea raise their brand awareness in the U.S. says Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck.

The move from the Bundesliga to the Premier League should also provide a nice boost to the individual player’s profile, according to USMNT Coach Gregg Berhalter.

“He’s a personable boy. He’s well-liked in this country,” Buck told the AP this week.

“So of course I would expect him when we come here and play some friendly matches, which is what our objective is in the summer of 2020. Then yes, I think he will he will be helpful.”

Right now, the game is a lot more popular on the coasts than it is in middle America, and there are many competing theories as to why that is. Chelsea is among the most popular teams in the country, right up there with the rest of the big six.

“The surveys tell us that we’re very strong on the two coasts,” Buck continued.

“We have some work to do in Middle America. I think we’re doing in round terms as well as any other big club.”

Berhalter sees the move to Stamford Bridge as very advantageous for Christian Pulisic, for several reasons.

“We expect him to get on the field and compete for a position,” Berhalter said during our exclusive interview at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

“With the English speaking language, I think that will help him. The English Premier League is an exciting league, a fast league and I think it fits nicely to his game, so we’re expecting big things from him in his move to Chelsea.”
