Diego Costa and Chelsea battled Liverpool to a 1-1 draw yesterday in a match that many would consider a victory for the Reds and a loss for the Blues. Given the horrendous January that Liverpool had, this was definitely a moral victory. Considering that Chelsea had won 16 of their last 18 heading into the league fixture, this has got to be considered a setback.
Diego Costa, the man who everybody has a strong opinion on, once again played a major role in the outcome of the match, and of course, it was a controversial.
The Spaniard won a penalty, subsequently saved by Simon Mignolet, but he spent the evening being himself, the polarizing figure that he is. Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp praised Diego Costa for being a “warrior,” just as he has in the past.
However, the German also said that he knows the two would “never be friends” if they played against one another.
“If I had played against Costa I could never be friends, that’s how it is, but when you have him in your team it’s much more fun. He is a warrior,” the Liverpool boss said.
“What [Antonio] Conte is doing with Chelsea is outstanding but Chelsea without Costa this season….?”
“He is not the nicest guy on the pitch but I saw no real big incident and until someone tells me something…”
“If someone tells me it was a dive maybe I will be angry tomorrow but that would be the wrong decision what, number 27, but it doesn’t make it better.”
