Homer Simpson said during a classic episode of The Simpsons: “Everyone knows rock achieved perfection in 1974; it’s a proven scientific fact.”
Change the year to 1996, and credit the Smashing Pumpkins’ double album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” and I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Homer made that proclamation on the very same episode in which the Smashing Pumpkins appeared.
Jimmy Chamberlin is the former drummer for the Smashing Pumpkins, and he’ll be part of the lineup at Wrigleyville’s Metro on Thursday, July 9th. The event, named “Hot Stove/Cool Music” features Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein, MLB Network Analyst Peter Gammons and Cubs broadcaster Len Kasper.
The fourth annual event celebrates music, baseball and benefits Epstein’s Foundation To Be Named Later (FTBNL), the fundraiser will feature ensemble performances by a special guest “headliner to be named later” (which should be released any day now) and noted rockers from Chicago and Boston.
The Smashing Pumpkins headlined a previous HSCM event.
The 2015 lineup includes, in addition to Chamberlin, John Stirratt (Wilco), Daxx Nielsen (Cheap Trick) and more. Epstein, Gammons and Kasper also will perform with the bands.
Chamberlin is very busy these days, as he’s CEO of LiveOne Inc.
The company has since partnered with Yahoo, YouTube, Live Nation, AEG, Vans, among others. Chamberlin performs these days under the name Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. He also does a few shows a year with Chicago jazz legend Frank Catalano. Chamberlin’s roots are in jazz, and some of his greatest influences are jazz musicians.
