The Wayne Rooney testimonial yesterday made history, in more ways than one. The match celebrated Rooney’s past, present and future with United, as well as his past with his former club Everton. The match ended in a goalless draw, but it marked the first home match at Old Trafford for Manager Jose Mourinho as well as the three new summer transfer window signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
The game was also the first English match to be streamed live on Facebook. Earlier this season the National Women’s Soccer League streamed an Orlando Pride game on Alex Morgan’s Facebook fan page.
All proceeds from the testimonial went to the Wayne Rooney Foundation, to be distributed to the four chosen charity partners of the Manchester United and England National Team Captain.
Wayne Rooney said that he hopes the Facebook live stream will help increase the goals of the foundation:
“I am delighted my testimonial game will be streamed globally, which will hopefully raise awareness and increase donations,” Rooney said before the match.
