Memphis Depay Says His MUFC Place Secure Despite LVG Sacking

Manchester United purchased the contract of winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven a little over a year ago when the two clubs agreed upon a reportedly £25 million fee on May 7, 2015. The leading scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie, then Manager Louis van Gaal gave Depay his chance in the English top flight after working with the winger on Team Netherlands.

The first United signing in last year’s summer transfer window was indeed the worst as Memphis Depay was a total flop.

He was deservedly named to a few publications Premier League “Worst XI” teams, as he scored only a few number of goals and almost all of them came against lower level competition in non-league competition.

Many are wondering about his future with the club. There has been a ton of speculation that Depay could be out the door, as he just failed to live up to the astronomical expectations that come along with wearing the #7 shirt (just like Angel di Maria before him). Depay said today that he feels secure in his place at Old Trafford, despite the sacking of Van Gaal last night.

Depay told De Telegraaf that the transition away from Van Gaal and towards Jose Mourinho will not unsettle his career.

“No, this does not affect me. I am happy to be at Manchester United and the board is happy with me, so I don’t know why it would.”

Memphis also shot down the idea that he only got his chance in the Premier League because of his countryman.

“I say that because I believe in myself and work hard,” he said.

When asked if he had a love-hate relationship with Van Gaal (who notoriously dropped him for the FA Cup Final this past weekend), Depay said: “I don’t know, and now he’s leaving. That’s how it goes in football, in life, and you learn and grow stronger.”
