July 1 has passed meaning that the summer transfer window is now open for business, and that we should see a few players coming and going each day until September. United defender Matteo Darmian is rumored to be one of those individuals with a potential return to his homeland potentially in the works.
Darmian was the first player bought by United in the summer of 2015, brought over from Torino, and he quickly settled in at the right back position during the 2015-16 season. His Old Trafford career got off to a nice start under Louis van Gaal, but eventually his effectiveness declined, and he started losing his place.
In the transition to new Manager Jose Mourinho, Darmian lost his starting back position to Antonio Valencia, and instead moved over to the other side, where he made 29 appearances. He ended up becoming the first choice left back, as both Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw were plagued by both injuries and ineffectiveness. Matteo Darmian was in the first XI for the UEFA Europa League Final against Ajax in Stockholm, conveying the value that the club has for him.
Despite two Serie A side reportedly keen on scopping him up, Mourinho supposedly does not want to sell.
Sources telling ESPN FC that “Matteo Darmian will have to ask to leave Manchester United if he wants to join Juventus or Inter Milan this summer. United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to keep the defender at Old Trafford despite interest from the two Italian sides.”
