Manchester United unsuccessful with bid for Everton duo

Manchester United’s combined bid for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini and left back Leighton Baines has been turned down by their club. An offer believed to be £28m was labelled “derisory and insulting” by Everton in a press statement on the club’s website.

“Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players. Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting,” said Everton’s director of communications Alan Myers. “The club did not make public these details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in any way.”

United have been chasing a central midfielder throughout the summer and after coming empty-handed with deals for Alcantara and Fabregas, David Moyes has switched his attention towards the Belgian international. Many experts and United fans have questioned the move as United seems to be in the need of a creative midfielder, and not a holding midfielder as priority. In the past couple of seasons, the club has dearly missed the services of the evergreen Paul Scholes, but has been unable to find a suitable replacement for him.

It may sound strange at the beginning of a season but Manchester United have already entered the toughest phase of their title campaign. Although the team’s performance against Swansea was gritty, one would imagine that to fend off such league big-wigs as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the coming weeks, Untied cannot afford to field just one quality midfielder in Michael Carrick.
