Jurgen Klopp Calls Out Two VAR Decisions in EFL Cup Crash Out

Liverpool crashed out of the League Cup last night at the hands of Chelsea, and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has some issues with how it happened. Chelsea bested Liverpool 2-1 in a third round clash that the Reds end the evening with one less chance of a trophy this season. However, Klopp believes the VAR (video assisted referee) got Chelsea’s first goal wrong.

He believes that Alvaro Morata and Ross Barkley were both offside on Emerson Palmieri’s goal.

“I think the first goal is offside,” the German said to the BBC. “Three players are offside – two for sure. They watched it and didn’t think it was offside. We have to take it.”

Klopp also questioned VAR awarding the free kick in the buildup, when Naby Keita was ruled to have committed a fouled on Victor Moses.

At his post match news conference, Klopp hit out at both calls.

“Both discussable. I don’t think it’s a foul. He plays the ball and then he touched afterwards, but things like that happen,” Klopp said in the press conference.

“We constantly touch each other with feet, with arms and stuff like that. Not all of that is a foul. It’s a clear ball and the linesman wanted to give a throw-in. That’s it’s a foul and then a yellow card is always strange. And then the situation, I didn’t see it in the game, of course, but when they started using the VAR I knew it was close, obviously.”

“It was close, it was really close. I don’t think I have the Liverpool glasses on my nose, I would say it’s offside. That’s then how it is.”

“You have two players that are clearly offside and they block,” Jurgen Klopp continued.

“Not to forget, they don’t touch the ball. They block players, my players. That means a big impact in the situation.
