Chelsea have been targeting Abdul Baba Rahman for quite some time. With Filipe Luis sold back to Atletico Madrid after just one season, this transfer started to make much more sense, as Chelsea needed a new full back. Today, it appears that the Blues are closing the deal for the Augsburg left back.
The deal could be completed sometime after the Community Shield, club sources have told ESPN FC.
Augsburg rejected an initial offer of around €20m ($22m) for the player they signed from Greuther Furth only last summer for £1million but reports in the German media say they have now agreed to a bid of 25million euros ($27m), which also contains significant bonuses.
“Both clubs are still working on fine-tuning but we hope the agreement will be finalised soon,” Rahman’s agent, Sascha Empacher, told the Guardian.
The potential Baba Rahman acquisition adds more activity to what has essentially been a very quiet transfer window at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea let back-up goalkeeper Petr Cech go to Arsenal, replaced him with Asmir Begovic from Stoke City and signed Manchester United cast-off striker Radamel Falcao; who was coming off a very unsuccessful loan spell from Monaco.
Chelsea has also been linked with moves for Barcelona’s Pedro and Everton’s John Stones this summer.
