Alexis Sanchez May Miss the Rest of the 2018-19 Season

We can say for certain now that Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez won’t have the opportunity to play at the Emirates Stadium against his former team, Arsenal, on Sunday. He won’t be taking part in the UEFA Champions League clash at Paris Saint-Germain either.

It looks rather unlikely that he’ll suit up again for United this season. Scans have shown that Sanchez did suffer ligament damage in his right knee during the Red Devils come from behind win over Southampton on Saturday.

Chilean national team physio Pedro Onate gave the following details to El Mercurio (h/t NBC Sports):

“We communicated with Sanchez, he has had his scans and that’s the injury – there will be no problems for him to play in the Copa America [this summer] because it will be six to eight weeks without playing. The medial ligament is a troublesome injury but not so complex.”

Meanwhile ESPN FC reports that Alexis could “be out for at least a month with a knee injury but there are fears he could spend as long as eight weeks on the sidelines.”

When you figure the timelines of his recovery and return, the Chilean may only be back for the last couple of matches, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that he just shuts it down until the summer. Alexis Sanchez is a massive, fiery competitor though, so if he can get back, you know he will. And he’ll work as hard as possible to get there.

Alexis Sanchez has certainly endured a nightmarish spell at Old Trafford, since he moved over from Arsenal in January of 2018.
