Thibaut Courtois Expected to Leave Chelsea, Undergo Real Madrid Medical Tomorrow

Chelsea are set to complete a triad of summer transfer window deadline day moves with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois finishing out the triad of deals. Blue is the color of deadline day. The winner of the Golden Gloves award with Belgium at the World Cup in Russia this summer is set to undergo his Real Madrid medical tomorrow and finalize the switch, according to Sky Sports.

Sky reports that Courtois “is currently in Belgium awaiting permission from Chelsea to fly to Madrid.”

The Courtois transfer will be the third Chelsea related domino to fall, with the first being the Blues acquisition of Athletic Bilbao shot stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Finding Courtois’ replacement will cost the Blues £71 million, and thus make him the most expensive goalkeeper in world history.

As part of the Courtois deal, Real Madrid have agreed to send want away midfielder Mateo Kovacic out on loan to Chelsea for the season. Kovacic is reportedly undergoing his medical today.

The Courtois deal isn’t quite finalized as of yet, but the agreed upon transfer fee, as reported by multiple outlets, is £35 million. If that seems low it’s because the Belgian was in the final year of his Chelsea deal and thus the club was lacking in bargaining power.

Additionally, Courtois has often made public his strong desire to move to Spain, alerting the world that it would not be difficult to get him to move to Madrid. The shot stopper supreme has two small children there, which he says he doesn’t get to see enough. Courtois also spent three years on loan to Atletico Madrid, where he developed a love for the country’s culture.
