The Philadelphia Eagles completed their coaching search over the weekend, and the early returns are…pretty bad. It’s not something I think Philadelphia Eagles fans took very well; stable and reasonable lot that they are. According to rankings by ESPN, Pederson’s hire was the worst hire of a head coach to this point.
Here’s how ESPN ranked the first 6 hires of this hiring season (since this list was released, the Tennessee Titans promoted Mike Mularkey from interim coach to head coach): (h/t CBS Philly)
-
Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns
-
Chip Kelly, San Francisco 49ers
-
Adam Gase, Miami Dolphins
-
Dirk Koetter, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
-
Ben McAdoo, New York Giants
-
Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagles
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Saturday (just before the hire was made) on the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching search, Doug Pederson and the Philadelphia Eagles:
“It’s safe to say that no team that’s out of the playoffs really has a rooting interest except maybe the Philadelphia Eagles. What they want is for the Chiefs and Doug Pederson’s offense to score a ton of points and for the Chiefs to lose because as soon as the game is over, the Eagles are set to strike a deal with Doug Pederson the offensive coordinator to be their next head coach. Now they had interest in bringing in Ben McAdoo for a second interview; the Giants made sure that didn’t happen, they hired him.
“They also talked to Tom Coughlin and wanted to talk to him again before he decided it was not the right fit. And then they zeroed in on Doug Pederson. They have no other interviews scheduled and as soon as the game is over, he will join the Eagles.”
