With the 2015 US Open next month we are quite literally salivating at the exciting prospect of seeing some more terrific golfing action. All the action will take place on Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington and marks the 115th time that the event has been held. The tournament is watched by millions around the world and many believe it to be the ideal course for Tiger Woods to once more tackle to help him claw his way back to his golfing best.
Last year’s US open was won by German Martin Kaymer and it marked the first time that a European player outside of the UK had won the tournament in its 119 year history. The historic win at Pinehurst in North Carolina was also highlighted by the fact that Kaymer had become the player in history to open a major with not one but two rounds of 65 or better. The 29 year old at the time also managed to set a brand new US Open for scoring 130, the lowest 36-hole score in the competition.
This year there are plenty of players hoping to take Kaymer’s title. American pro golfer Jordan Spieth recently picked up the 2015 Masters title and will be setting his sights on the Open to hopefully set up his next big win. In spite of his recent form Spieth isn’t currently the bookies favourite to walk away with the coveted trophy, instead that honour goes to Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy. The 26 year old will be hoping to repeat his success of winning the trophy back in 2011 when he heads out to Chambers Bay in the next few weeks.
The world number one McIlroy himself is just coming off the back of winning the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship in Harding Park which took place at the beginning of the month. The Irishman managed to snatch the victory from US pro Gary Woodland 4 & 2 in the final and the win itself has helped McIlroy become just one of three players ever to win 10 PGA tour titles before turning 26, with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods being the other two.
Talking of Tiger, the links course in Washington that stretches over 7600 yards is said to be very suited towards the 39 year olds game. He’s just behind the likes of Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott as the bookies favourite to pick up a surprising US Open victory next month so you may want to keep an eye on the free golf betting tips out there to see if that changes in the next few weeks. Woods is reportedly focused once more on his game and now has a few professional matches under his belt. Hopefully the competition will give us some brief glimpses of brilliance from the giant of the game who has sadly lost his winning ways in recent years.
