#100 DePaul Blue Demons: College Basketball 111 in 111

depaul blue demon

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Another college hoops season, another year where the DePaul Blue Demons are picked to finish in the cellar of the Big East.  Oliver Purnell was hoping the resurrection of the program would have been accelerated from where it now is entering year three.  Instead, DePaul has still yet to show any true growth from a team that has won just five conference games in the past four years.

DePaul Will Continue Running and Gunning This Year

Last night DePaul defeated the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, a team that will spend the first two months of the season on the road, with trips to No. 1 North Carolina, eighth-ranked Florida, and No. 15 Wisconsin along the way.

The Delta Devils opened the season on Saturday, losing 80-67 at Notre Dame. As they embark on the long road trip, they’ll no doubt remember their game at McGrath Arena, where they encountered a DePaul team that loves to play a fast up-and-down style.

In the preseason, DePaul lost three players to injuries and eligibility issues, they really can’t afford to lose any more, if they hope to continue playing their fast-paced, always pressing style.

DePaul Blue Demons off to 2-0 Start

In two of the last three years, DePaul has won four of their first five. So very early season success is nothing new to them. It’s the Big East conference games where the trouble starts.

But January 1 versus Syracuse can wait for now, as the Blue Demons rolled past the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (Yes, Blue Demons versus Delta Devils, Satan no doubt loves the mascots in this one) 80-70.

Senior guard Jeremiah Kelly led the game with 24 points on 6-12 from behind the arc. DPU shot 10-24 from downtown for the game.

DePaul Blue Demons Now Left with Just 9 Scholarship Players

Any chance that Oliver Purnell‘s re-building project at DePaul would take effect this season has been severely hampered due to the loss of two players to injury and one freshman being ruled ineligible.  And yesterday that freshman withdrew so he won’t be available for 2012-23 now either.

As a result, the Blue Demons will enter the 2011-2012 season with just nine scholarship players available for the beginning of the season.

McKinney, a 6-4 guard with a 6-8 wingspan, joins DePaul’s top 25-ranked recruiting class that includes Chicagoland signees Jamee Crockett and Macari Brooks along with Orlando native Shane Larkin and Derrell Robertson from Mississippi.

CBSSports.com affiliated MaxPreps.com ranks DePaul’s incoming class at No. 25 in the nation and seventh among the Big East’s 16 programs.

Oliver Purnell’s DePaul Stint Begins with Begins by Blowing Out Chicago State

oliver purnell

The first game of the Oliver Purnell era at DePaul will be described in the college basketball history books as perhaps: sloppy, uneven, foul-heavy, fast-paced, high-scoring and extremely high-energy.

DePaul beat Chicago State beat 114-81 in their opener, an excellent redemption after an embarrassing loss in their lone exhibition versus Lewis.

“It’s only the first game so I don’t want to get all that excited for it. The freshmen are all excited because it’s their first college win, and I’m happy for them but we still need to grind it out all season,” said Demons leading returning scorer Mike Stovall.

Given the fast pace of this game, I half-expected Kyle Lee Watson to get into a fist-fight with Birdie at some point.

(The shootout championship in “Above the Rim”…did that film reference not work? Should I have said Duane Martin vs. Tupac Shakur? Anyway that fictional basketball game is the only game of hoops I’ve seen which moved as fast as this one)

DePaul Tip-Off Luncheon Ushers in New Era

Oliver Purnell DePaul

Make no mistake, these are not the DePaul Blue Demons of Rod Strickland, Mark Acquirre and Ray Meyer. However, they are also not the Demons you’ve gotten used to seeing lose by 30 night in and night out for the past few years. With the hire of Oliver Purnell away from Clemson, the Demons now have a reclamation project guru in Lincoln Park.

And that’s exactly what they need in a new head coach. Purnell has revitalized programs everywhere he’s been: Clemson, Dayton, Radford, Old Dominion. You might not see a lot of noticeable progess this year, but trust me it’s coming.
