Park Tudor freshman Trevon Bluiett is attracting a lot of attention these days.
He’s a top 25 national prospect for the 2014 recruiting class, and basketball powerhouses IU and Purdue, are already wooing him. Last week, IU Basketball Coach Tom Crean offered the high school freshman a scholarship.
While he’s known for his skill and efficiency on the court, Bluiett has also been honing his mental game off court as well. In looking at the basketball future for their son, Rey and Maryam Bluiett also wanted to make sure that Trevon was well equipped to handle the demands of being an all-star athlete and student. They turned to LearningRx Indianapolis for help with the mental aspect of his performance.

“Scholarships are about athletics and academics,” says Lynne McCauley, Executive Director of LearningRx. “The demands on the time of a student athlete are incredibly high. The same brain skills that allow Trevon to quickly scan the court, anticipate plays and do it faster than the competition, are the same skills he uses for reading, math and overall learning.”
Bluiett admits that he needed help with his reading comprehension skills before coming to LearningRx. “Before LearningRx, I would read something and then not be able to talk about what I had just read.” LearningRx worked on fine-tuning his auditory processing skills (brain skills essential for reading, writing and language), as well as his reading comprehension and long-term memory skills. According to LearningRx’s McCauley “helping Trevon learn faster, smarter, more efficiently buys him the extra discretionary time he needs to devote to athletics.”
Improving his study skills was another priority for Bluiett. His busy practice and travel schedule doesn’t give him a lot of extra time for studying. He’s known for his efficiency on the basketball court, but he wanted to be as efficient when it came time for academics. “LearningRx taught me strategies to help me better understand and remember information when I am studying,” says Bluiett. “So now when I study for tests, it’s easier for me.”
Bluiett’s Dad, Rey, has spent a great deal of time coaching Trevon for physical performance, so he immediately understood the benefit of training the brain for mental performance. The Bluiett’s jumped in with both feet, enrolling Trevon and his younger brother, Juwaan, in LearningRx. Both boys completed their training programs in September, but the benefits were apparent early on.
“My wife and I started LearningRx because studying for tests took up so much of his time, which resulted in less time for Tre’s other activities,” says Rey. “Since attending LearningRx, Tre’s processing skills have improved immensely. He has better time management skills, which helps him maintain his extracurricular activities, as well as his devotion to his studies.”
