That Bulls-Celtics series- when it started I just wasn’t very excited. Before the postseason, I was like the rest of Chicago not very interested in the Bulls. I mean who gets all warm and tingly about a 41-41 team sneaking into the playoffs? A squad with a joke of a coach and an ugly home loss to the OKC Thunder on their resume. But something magical happened in that series, a series which is no longer arguably the best first-round series ever.
With all it’s extra sessions, it IS the best 1st round series of all time.
I blew off a chance to meet Robert Redford and to see some of the most prominent social thinkers of our generation speak in order to watch Game 7. This series was just that monumental, and it made us all care about the Bulls because it made us realize, “hey the Bulls are truly back now.” And even though it was the longest series in NBA history, it went by too quick. To quote a character once played by Redford “you just want to reach out and take it back” (he was describing the end of summer in the title role of 1973’s The Great Gatsby).
