The Philadelphia 76ers will release former All-Star Elton Brand under the league’s amnesty clause, according to ESPN:
The move to release Brand will be necessitated by the expected signing of free-agent guard Nick Young and the planned re-signing of center Spencer Hawes.
Teams that did not use their one-time amnesty clause last season can waive one player via the amnesty provision between July 11-17 and see that player’s contract figures vanish from the team’s payroll for salary-cap and luxury-tax purposes.
The anticipated release of the once Chicago Bulls big man immediately makes one wonder which teams would want Brand, and the answer is simple, any team with a lot of cap space, and a need for a big man.

One can’t help but draw parallels between the two teams who met in the #1 vs. #8 match-up in the first round of the NBA playoffs this past season.
The Bulls are pretty solid up front, and have plenty of issues when it comes to paying them. Their front line is solid partially because they pay big money for it. Doing the same thing to Carlos Boozer that Philly did to Brand is the move to make only if/when they have a big move to make.
The Boozer is a bad contract, yes we know that. The Luol Deng contract isn’t great either. But amnestying Boozer right now isn’t the right thing to do now, with a lost season upcoming. And with Derrick Rose missing for at least half the season, it’s a lost winter. The time to amnesty Boozer will be when they’re ready to blow up what’s around Rose and build over. When they have someone knew to sign, who would complement Derrick, that is the time to jettison Boozer and clear up the cap space.
