Stanley Cup Coming to Northwestern Football Game on Saturday

It may have been in the low 90s in The Chi today, but hockey preseason has already begun, believe it or not. Now you may have a less than optimistic perspective on the Blackhawks’ upcoming season, due to the fact they gave away assets and weapons like Russia after the Berlin Wall crumbled, but remember this- the cup is still here.
And sport’s most cherished and recognizable trophy will visit Ryan Field this Saturday (Sept. 25),  prior to the 11 a.m. kickoff between Northwestern and Central Michigan.

The National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup, which landed in Chicago after the Blackhawks defeated the Flyers in the Stanley Cup final, will be part of a pregame presentation when Northwestern’s Department of Athletics recognizes Blackhawks’ Chairman Rocky Wirtz, a 1975 School of Communication graduate, and Blackhawks’ President John McDonough, a frequent Northwestern lecturer and a Faculty Advisory Board member for Northwestern’s master of arts in sports administration program.

This recognition ceremony is set to take place at approximately 10:50 a.m. at midfield.

“As a native Chicagoan who grew up cheering for the Blackhawks, this is a thrill for our fans,” said Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald. “It’s terrific that we can recognize Rocky and John who have been so instrumental in leading the Blackhawks back to the top of the NHL. There should be plenty of electricity in the stadium on Saturday with the Stanley Cup on the field and our students back in the stands.”
