Johnny Davis Top Concern as Northwestern Hosts #8 Wisconsin

Wisconsin guard Johnny Davis is considered a front-runner for Big Ten Player of the Year, National Player of the Year awards and a NBA Draft Lottery prospect. He leads the top ten ranked Wisconsin Badgers into Evanston tonight to take on the up-and-down Northwestern Wildcats.

NU is coming off their massive upset victory at #10 Michigan State on Saturday. The Wildcats took down the Spartans despite missing Pete Nance, who is their leading scorer (17.7 points) and rebounder (7.7). Nance, a fringe NBA Draft prospect had a career-high 28 in the 2 OT loss against Maryland on Wednesday night.

#10 Michigan State Basketball at Northwestern FYIs, Stats, Info

Michigan State basketball began the season flying under the radar, unranked for most of the preconference portion, but they’re back on the map now. Ranked in the top ten once again, in both polls, the Spartans look like they’ll be a major factor in the Big Ten race this year.

The New Year’s slate, where conference season really gets started in earnest, sees MSU visit Northwestern, a place where they didn’t just lose last season, but lost rather convincingly. Will they make amends for that in this Sunday matinee?

Return of Chase Audige Elevates Northwestern Basketball’s Potential

After missing the first seven games of this season due to a hip injury, Chase Audige returned to Northwestern and started for the Wildcats on Sunday. He was the Cats’ leader in both scoring and steals last season, and his energy on the court has already given the team a boost this season, leading them to their first win at Maryland ever.

While this year’s Terrapins are certainly nothing close to your older brother’s Terrapins, it’s an impressive way to begin the Big Ten conference season nonetheless. Northwestern is currently 6-2, with a KenPom of 36.

Pete Nance, Son of NBA Legend Larry Nance, Improving Draft Stock

Pete Nance is the son of three time NBA All-Star and 1984 Slam Dunk champion Larry Nance, and should his senior season at Northwestern go well, he could conceivably follow both his father and his older brother to the league.

Larry Nance Jr., currently with the Portland Trail Blazers, has been in the association since the Los Angeles Lakers selected him in the first round in 2015. Larry Nance Sr., a three time NBA All-Defensive Team award recipient, saw the Cleveland Cavaliers retire his #22.

Six Leading Candidates to be the Next Notre Dame Head Coach

Brian Kelly has bolted Notre Dame for LSU, and now we have to wonder what’s next. Kelly at Louisiana State is an odd hire, a strange fit to be sure, but why not embrace the strangeness of the silliest silly season ever.

Not even to conference championship Saturday yet and we’re already talking about a new hire at USC as well as openings at Notre Dame and Oklahoma. The domino theory is already starting to take shape. With that in mind, let’s look at who could be headed to South Bend.

Wrigley Field Has Been Unkind to Northwestern Thus Far

It was 11 years, to the exact day actually that Northwestern lost 48-27 to Illinois in Wrigley Field. A decade has passed and the stadium has been renovated and improved upon, but it was a very bad result, once again, for the home team as Northwestern fell 32-14 to Purdue. The Boilermakers covered, and if you’re into Betting sites, then you know the visitors were favored by 11 points, with even more bullish sentiment on the money lines.

While the sample size is indeed small, just two games, NU has now been outscored, on aggregate by 39 points in the two Wrigley affairs. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald rotated his quarterbacks, but it didn’t help to jumpstart the offense at all.

Why Wrigley Has Added Meaning for Northwestern OL Coach Kurt Anderson

For Northwestern Offensive Line Coach Kurt Anderson, tomorrow’s Wildcats Classic is extra special on a couple different levels. Obviously, it’s a Big Ten West division game, being staged in the very novel and picturesque backdrop that is Wrigley Field, and that’s huge in and of itself.

However, Anderson has connections to the facility through both the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears, and he discussed both today during a media opportunity to preview the field layout.

Wrigley Field Final Touches Applied for Northwestern-Purdue (Photos)

The Wildcats Classic (game preview and prediction here) is now hours, not days, away and Friday brought a chance for the media to come out on see the finishing touches on the Friendly Confines layout and playing surface.

Overall, it looks absolutely beautiful, just transcendent! However, as we covered during our preview podcast, you still have come cramped corners of the end zones, as space remains tight. No, it’s not as bad as the 2010 loss to Illinois, where both teams had to drive towards the same end zone, but it still doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room.
