According to multiple reports, Manchester United and Chelsea have agreed on a deal for midfielder Nemanja Matic. Reportedly, an agreement has been reached with the player scheduled to undergo his Old Trafford medical Sunday, and then be officially announced on Monday. Some outlets claim the deal is worth £40 million.
Matic has been linked with a Man United move all summer, but supposedly United’s swooping in to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku soured relations between the two clubs, and made the prospects of a deal much less likely.
However, later in this summer transfer window we saw reports that Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich personally stepped in and sanctioned the deal, as a reward to Nemanja Matic for his service to the club. Matic wants the move to the Red Devils where he would enter a situation with potentially more playing time than what is projected this season at Chelsea.
This would be the second time that Mourinho has acquired Matic, having signed him for Chelsea in 2014. Back then he cost half as much (£21 million) in January 2014 when he moved over from Benfica to his second term at Stamford Bridge.
Both club managers, Mourinho and CFC’s Antonio Conte, have publicly commented on the transfer narrative, but neither was able to say anything definitively.
